Know How to Plan for Your Own Success.
Successful people and successful businesses don’t happen by accident. Research has identified what these people do differently to achieve their aspirations.
One of the most important things that’s been highlighted is something that I prioritise with my own clients… It’s all about setting goals and making bitesize plans to achieve them.
With scientists estimating that only 8% of people actually achieve their goals, I work to buck this trend. Lack of planning and a ‘sit back and hope for the best attitude’ are the key drivers for this failure. As a finance expert, it’s not just about how much money that you bring in, but it’s about ensuring that you minimise the costs, manage the cashflow and streamline the processes, whilst clarifying priorities for everyone within the business.
I always begin with the end because it’s important to recognise why you do what you do and build a focused approach to getting there. If your goals are unrealistic then I’ll be completely honest because it’s so much more motivating to build towards something that’s achievable, than pie in the sky. They should however require growth and effort to maximise accomplishments and minimise demotivation.
In the words of Abraham Lincoln, “Give me 6 hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. “
This truly sums up my belief that as little as an hour of planning can save you hours of doing.
Some other key factors that have been identified may help you in building your business and achieving the success that you aspire to…
Successful people build a support network around them – In the same way as you call on the experts if you want to learn a new sport or how to play an instrument, successful people know that they can achieve more in a quicker time than trying to do everything themselves.
As well as my own financial expertise in supporting businesses, I’m also part of the incredible Rainmakers Club. Together we can offer a network of experts to support you in building your goals and plans in the first place, whilst keeping you on track and accountable for achieving them.
Successful people focus on one task at a time – There is so much pressure on us as individuals to be multi-taskers, when in fact multi-tasking has been proven to split our focus and effectiveness. Break down a project into manageable chunks and complete one part before even thinking about starting another.
“Multi-tasking is the ability to screw everything up simultaneously.” Anon
Successful people work smarter and not necessarily longer – A study found that 52 minutes at a time engrossed in work, followed by a 17-minute break retains the highest level of productivity. I’m a big believer in having regular breaks to refresh and recharge and so are my dogsJ. Otherwise I can feel myself burning out and that I’m clearly not working to my optimum level.
Successful people listen to music for focus – Music is a great way to maintain focus and stay productive. Different people respond to different types of music so it’s important to find what works for you. I personally listen to Kasabian when I need to focus and 80’s dance music when I need to inject some positivity and motivation into a difficult day.
Let’s build that support network around you and make you the success that you aspire to be…
